Connor Smith
Connor is a Litigation Attorney with Stoel Rives LLP in Anchorage. He just finished his first case with ANDVSA–a protective order case which concluded in the protective order being granted! Connor says for newer lawyers, volunteering for ANDVSA is “a really great opportunity for newer litigators to get more experience in court…there’s a beginning and an end to the commitment, the organization provides excellent support and written help, and you can make such an immediate difference.” Thank you, Connor, for your work supporting ANDVSA clients, and congratulations on your first ANDVSA case!
Connor, who grew up in Homer, was a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay for more than a decade, including while attending law school at Seattle University. His commercial fishing experience has come in handy in his legal career, as he has enjoyed helping fisheries industry clients navigate a variety of legal matters.
Connor spent the first few years of his legal career on the Bar Association’s Pro Bono Services Committee and even attended an ANDVSA CLE as a law student, so it made sense for him to take the step to volunteer at ANDVSA. “The biggest draw for me is that I am at a point in my career as a litigator where I want more first chair experience in front of judges. Katy (ANDVSA’s Senior Staff Attorney) was up front about finding a case that was a good fit for me, and was very encouraging, kind and patient throughout the process,” says Connor.
The experience turned out to be a valuable one. Connor says that he found both working with ANDVSA staff and working with his client to be rewarding. “The process of volunteering with ANDVSA was incredibly straightforward. There was very clear and prompt communication getting the case set up and answering questions. The client was great to work with, and it is incredible what an immediate difference you can make—she needed a PO, and we got a PO.”
Outside of work, Connor has a band–Wiley Post–who you may have seen around Anchorage. Their music is described as “groove rock and Americana.” Connor sings in addition to playing the electric cello and guitar. Connor also enjoys boating, hiking, and fly fishing.
Thank you, Connor, for taking time to help survivors of domestic violence in our state!
