Joe Towslee

Joe Towslee currently has two open cases with ANDVSA, and these cases are his first experience with pro bono work! Joe is an Anchorage born and raised attorney who specializes in family law.  He began working with ANDVSA in February with the encouragement of his firm, Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot.

From an early age, Joe knew that he wanted to be a lawyer, and this belief only solidified as he majored in psychology at Washington State University. His degree in psychology has proved useful in his legal practice as he describes family law as “deeply personal and emotional.” Graduating from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2018, Joe deeply appreciated the small town and community that he found in law school. After law school, he made his way to Seattle where he worked at Humphrey & Associates for five years. Joe quickly gained experience in a variety of areas due to the firm’s small size. While in Seattle, he married and decided to return to Anchorage upon the birth of his son to be closer to family and friends.

Joe says that taking a case through ANDVSA provides a unique experience for an attorney because there is little to no risk that the required client advocacy will go against the attorney’s personal beliefs: “It’s easier to go to the mat for [clients] knowing you can help their circumstances, and they need it.” With pro bono clients, Joe says that you are “making sure the client is not only getting assistance with legal problems,” but also “helping them navigate a new chapter of their lives.” Joe has most enjoyed seeing the growth in his clients, and he is looking forward to seeing his two cases through to the end to witness the “evolution mentally from where [the clients] were, to hopefully where they are going to be.”

When he is not taking on pro bono cases and working in family law, Joe enjoys fishing on the Kenai River, spending time with his wife, 18-month-old son, and the rest of his family in Anchorage.

Thank you for all your hard work and commitment to pro bono work, Joe!
