Volunteer Spotlight — April 2026

Whitney Brown

This month, we’re excited to highlight Whitney Brown as our Volunteer Attorney of the Month.

Whitney got connected to ANDVSA through the Bar’s Pro Bono Service Committee, where she expressed interest to our Senior Staff Attorney Katy Soden. When a case came up that needed support, Whitney stepped in and took on a protective order appeal—helping carry forward work that had already made a big impact for the survivor.

Whitney was quick to say how supported she felt throughout the process. With guidance from ANDVSA’s legal team and support from pro bono attorney Noah Star, who secured the protective order, she was able to step into the case and secure an affirmance.

For Whitney, the experience was a reminder of why she chose this profession in the first place. Being part of a case with such high stakes and helping a survivor move one step closer to justice made the work especially meaningful.

Whitney came to law as a second career, after earning her Master of Public Health and working in health advocacy in Washington, D.C. She later clerked for Judge Morgan Christen in Alaska and quickly fell in love with the state. She left to clerk on the U.S. Supreme Court but came back as soon as she could. Today, she is a partner at Stoel Rives, focusing on civil litigation and appeals.

When asked what she would say to other attorneys thinking about volunteering, her answer was simple: just do it. Even if it’s outside your usual area of practice, there are resources and people ready to support you—and the opportunity to help someone be heard makes it worth it.

Outside of work, Whitney enjoys hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, and reading. As the days get longer in Anchorage, she’s especially looking forward to spending time outdoors and welcoming friends and family from Outside to Alaska.

We’re grateful for Whitney’s willingness to step in, take on something new, and support a survivor in such a meaningful way.
